It's Movie Shout Out Sunday Time!
This week's question started a LOT of conversations. It was:
In your opinion, what is the worst film adapted from a terrific book?
We got some GREAT responses and several new books to read! Check out the responses below:
Cheaper by the Dozen (2003)

Yes Man (2008), they turned an awesome book about a guy growing up and trying to do something with his life into standard rom-com, I was so disappointed with the movie.

Actually, I just saw a commercial for it on Disney XD -- The Black Cauldron (1985). I remember being very excited when I heard Disney was going to bring it out as I loved the Lloyd Alexander series and I don't remember why it was awful, but I do remember getting pizza after seeing the movie in clouds of disappointment.

Blood and Chocolate (2007) -amazing young adult werewolf romance in America, then somehow in the film we're in Romania.

Congo (1995)

It's been a long time since I've read the book OR seen the movie, but if memory serves me correctly, The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990) was a pretty good book and a pretty terrible movie. Elmore Leonard's Be Cool (2005) was an OK read and a TERRIBLE movie. So disappointing.

if you count graphic novels as books then the V for Vendetta (2005) adaptation is pretty dire. And the less said about the American Psycho (2000) film, the better.

Less than Zero (1987). Or just about every movie made from a Tom Clancy novel.

Sadly, the out of the few books I read only LoTR (2001) made it to the big screen. But TV adaptation (though not what you are asking) would say Legend of the Seeker (2008).

V for vendetta (2005). It's an ok film on its own, pales compared to the book.I mostly dont watch movies based on books I've red & vice versa.

Not going to get points for the highbrow route here but The Running Man (1987) was a fantastic read and the movie was just awful. Awful, awful, awful.

The Golden Compass (2007). The movie took all the bite out of the story and made it a CGI-fest with talking animals. Also, Patricia Rozema's Mansfield Park(1999) in no way resembled the Austen book. Rozema swiped the title, the character names and that was it.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)

Anything originally written by Bret Easton Ellis (Except AmPsycho (2000)) Also, Time Traveler's Wife (2009), Golden Compass (2007), and for one of the worst I've EVER seen almost with no regard whatsoever for the source material: The Scarlet Letter (1995) (with Moore and Oldman).

I,Robot (2004)

Fay Weldon's Life and Loves of A She-devil (1989). An excellent book full of abuse, revenge, and destruction, something for every member of the family. The film was a Roseanne Barr vehicle made before Roseanne's career went completely off the rails. They even re-wrote the entire end so as not to "loose" her character. If that wasn't bad enough tacking on a lame vo moral of the story, in case the audience was too stupid to figure out their crappy movie.

I, Robot (2004)

I'll second the complaint about Demi Moore's The Scarlet Letter (1995). Absolutely terrible adaptation and really, really bad movie. David Lynch's Dune (1984) was also pretty bad.

I have to agree with Marcus. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005) had a lot of potential to be a great movie -Coming from such a great book and with such a fantastic cast, but it just ...wasn't right.

To say a movie like O (2001) is based off of Othello makes my heart sad...
