22 - Take a Holiday 'In Bruges'!
Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at 9:25AM What happens when you take a fairly well respected playwrite, let him write and direct his script, and then cast Colin Farrel, Ralph Fienes, and Brendan Gleeson?
You get 'In Bruges' of course!
Martin McDonagh's sophmore film venture was lauded with praise last year including an Academy Awards nomination for Best Screenplay, a BAFTA win for Best Screenplay, and a Golden Globes win for Farrel.
This crime-drama/dark comedy is ridiculously charming and one we hope you wont miss.

We here at MYMHM also wanted to deliver a special shout-out to Twitter friend and fan @KGLucas, who suggested this film as part of our week 3 t-shirt contest, but we had already shot the episode posted above.
And speaking of t-shirts, this also marks THE LAST WEEK of our Last Exit To Nowhere t-shirt giveaway. Wanna a shot at the last shirt? Better watch the episode!

Easily one of the most underrated films of last year. It has pretty much everything you need in a dark comedy.
Wow... this movie is sooo good. I didn't even mind the fat Americans cause I felt it played into Farrell's "I say anything that's in my head and can't understand why you don't already know it" character. I wish you guys had talked a little bit more about the girl and her pimp. that scene had me rollin. There's a race war a comin friends! ridicuous.
Great episode/great movie, guys! I REALLY want you guys to talk about Sexy Beast now, especially since it's sitting RIGHT THERE.
Anyways, my favorite t-shirt on lastexittonowhere.com is the AMITY POLICE t-shirt, because I love me some Jaws.
I'm felling you guys. This movie completely took me by surprise. Charmingly brutal LOL!
Because the film has SO many pay offs, we tried not setting up too much of the side character stories. It's just so satisfying when a character you don't expect to return does, and actually contributes to the story in a meaningful way. You can certainly see McDonagh's playwriting roots in the way situations return to affect change on the story.
Oh, and Alex, Logged and noted! I wonder how many people might think it's from The Amityville Horror...
Haha, nope, JAWS all the way! As the years go by, my appreciation of it increases exponentially.
I was tempted by this movie when it first came out -- sounded different in an interesting and amusing way. So now I've added it to the Netflix queue...I'll have to get back to you on the t-shirt as I promised my in house movie consultant she could pick it out if I won one -- oh gee, guess I'll have to come back here again, thanks to Lee's fiendish anti Twitter anti Facebook plan.
Mwah-HA-HA-HA Lonelypond!
Our evil plan is one person closer to completion...
I love the Miskatonic University shirt
this really is such a lovely, and darkly funny, film. happened to watch it almost by accident when it was first released on dvd - then couldn't tear my eyes away. love the sweet sad martyred anti-hero archtype.
Apparently there was an early draft at the end where Farrell's character does commit suicide. I would've hated that. I love not knowing what happens to him at the end. That all of this happened just to give to let him DESERVE a chance at redemption. He doesn't even GET redemption, just the chance.
Thanks for the comment Dorie!
"You don't know karate!"
*karate chop to the throat*
I haven't laughed so hard is a LONG time.
LOL! It was easily one of the most unexpected/ineffective karate chops ever dedicated to film!
One of my favourite darker comedies now (and I missed in the cinema, bah!); not so much a black comedy but certainly up there, however it's got plenty of good classic humour and wit to keep you laughing throughout. Hard to do considering the great drama elements too. Lots of Chekhov's guns everywhere, some very well hidden and thoroughly rewarding if you remember things from the different parts of the film.
Great review of it too; I agree on the Americans joke, that kind of is out of place except the character pulls it off in the same way he was doing for everything else. Brendan Gleeson is great too (and I actually enjoyed Colin Farrell, which is great). It's good to also perhaps go and see the short film Six Shooter which has Gleeson in and is done by McDonagh in 2005; you see some of the same kinds of wordplay, humour and dark stuff (I caught it online; I doubt you can find it to buy anywhere), is good "extra material" as it were, wish it was on the DVD for In Bruges.
You know what, it's strange, but I have no reason to celebrate NY this year. I want to enjoy spring and freelance writing, but I can't
