31 - The MYMHM Sports Movie Spectacular!
Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 8:27AM OK. So it should really be called the "MYMHM American Football Movie Spectacular", as all three movies are about American Football, but really we're just overcompensating for the fact that we've NEVER covered a sports movie here on Movies You May Have Missed.
There are TONS of movies we wanted to discuss, but the three here in this episode help qualify why we do this show. 'The Longest Yard' helped define what sports movies could be, and without it many other sports movies wouldn't have been attempted. 'Wildcats' is an often overlooked gem of a comedy, and 'Necessary Roughness' is our obligatory screwball comedy guilty pleasure.

HaHa! you're both wearing brown! ... Just joking. :) This is a most excellent episode. All 3 movies rocked, but 'Necessary Roughness' was the most funniest review. Thank you guys! Awesome!
D'Oh!
I KNEW someone would make fun of us for matching...
I have seen Necessary Roughness. I liked it as well as a guilty pleasure. The original Longest Yard is easily one of the best sports movies of all time. Ray Nitschke is the linebacker who takes it in the balls. For real, he was a Hall of Famer for the Green Bay Packers during the Lombardi era. One of the others is Joe Kapp. Played at Cal and the Minnesota Vikings. One of the lesser knowns is the backup QB for the inmates (character is referred to as “the indian”). His real name is Sonny Sixkiller. He played for the U of Washington and was pretty much done with football. Too short for the pros.
RAY NITSCHKE!!! I couldn't remember his name to SAVE MY LIFE while we were shooting! Ugh!
The list of players in Longest Yard is a far cry from other sports movies. I remember how big a deal it was that Lawrence Taylor was going to be in Any Given Sunday...
