36 - We're Not Pretentious Enough to Call it 'Lola Rennt'...
Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 8:18AM It's 90s time!
This film helped a whole generation of American film fans find foreign films. This Tykwer classic is an incredible mixed media, hyper kinetic, feast for the eyes, with a story that plays with time in an interesting way.
It's a near perfect example of what films from the 1990's looked like. Check it out!

Also a huge thank you to fan of the show Nicolas Alanou for suggesting we cover a Tykwer movie!

One that I actually *didn't* miss when it came out, but I'm glad you covered this one -- it's one of my favorite films of the late 90s, and not enough people have seen it. Good call!
"Lola rennt" is in my opinion one of the very few genuinely good films, that the film industry in Germany (which is, where I live) has managed to create.
This episode made me wonder, how well "Das Boot" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082096/) is known outside of Germany.
I have yet to see a movie from here, that can hold a candle to it. If you haven't seen it, you absolutely should.
Thanks for the shout out, I didn't ask for that much.
Now the next step in my evil plan will be making you talk about Tsui Hark, Bong Joon Ho & Jacques Tati [insert devilish laugh here]
@Dave Yep "Das Boot" is an amazing submarine movie that makes you wonder whether Wolfgang Petersen shouldn't have stayed in Germany for the rest of his career. And for other recent german movies easy to get into, "Goodbye Lenin" is an excellent comedy, "the life of others" is pretty good.
Glad you guys are digging the episode!
I LOVES me some Das Boot, and Goodbye Lenin is on both Lee and my lists to check out. I'm not very well versed on modern German film, but I've always had the highest respect for German expressionism. Lang and Murnau created much of the modern film making techniques we take for granted today (years before Welles for that matter).
You're welcome Nicolas. Thanks again for the Tykwer enthusiasm!
Love Run Lola Run. Love your review. Well done, guys!
Not seen many German films myself (I need to catch Das Boot and perhaps Goodbye Lenin), but in any case, taken by itself this is a great inventive film, mixing media, and doing a head nod I think to videogames and loading up past save games, hehe.
So much energy too; even the fastest-paced action films don't seem to do energy and movement as well as this, since they usually involve gun battles or martial arts.
