37 - Vampires Aren't Romantic in 'Shadow of the Vampire'
Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at 8:20AM See I like it better when vampires are apex predators not hopeless romantics... Just sayin...
Shadow of the Vampire is an incredibly fun "what if" movie that does a great job of playing with history. Loosely chronicling the events surrounding the filming of the 1922 horror classic 'Nosferatu', Shadow asks "What if the guy playing the vampire REALLY WAS a vampire?" What results is a really touching examination of old versus new, and the creation of one of the most prima-donna actors in the history of cinema.

We also have to extend a huge thanks to friend and fan Donna D. for suggesting this remarkable film, and keep an eye out for an MYMHM supplemental where we'll take a look at the original Nosferatu!

How can I get one of those mugs?
I'm glad you asked! We're still working out the colors and design (right now the blue lettering is really hard to see), but we're hoping to make a line of mugs available in the next month or so!
ooh! what a great choice of movies! i love this one. hasn't willem defoe's career just been amazing?
and i have to agree with you on preferring wicked, predatory vampires. i also like my zombies slow, but i don't see that trend coming back... ;-)
I would KILL for Dafoe's career. He's been involved on some incredible projects, and he's one of those great ensemble players that always improves the movies he's in. Even Daybreakers ;-)
I'm also with you on slow zombies. I'm still hoping against hope that World War Z is made (and done well). Max Brooks take on the zombie is a great modern way to write a disease story, but it's still a story about walking corpses not super fast angry super powered cannibals....
In fact I'm usually disappointed ANY time supernatural powers are bestowed upon people by the transfer of disease. I've NEVER bought it. Disease makes you un-well not super strong...
dis-ease. exactly. i wonder what a parasite movie would look like, as parasite don't necessarily harm their hosts but can lead them to bizarre and risky behavior in order to get passed along. is that just too gross? has this been done?
Actually that would be pretty rad...
I just read a science journal about a type of fungus which hijacks ants, and makes the ants climb certain types of trees so the fungus can have an easier time growing. Crazy stuff...
I think the closest we've gotten to that type of story has been 'The Happening' which was pretty ... um ... ugh...

In a similar vein of your discussion of whether you should see "Shadow of the Vampire" or "Nosferatu" first, I had the same discussion with my sister about "Ed Wood" and "Plan 9 from Outer Space". I decided it's better if one watches "Ed Wood" first because it puts the movie into context and gives viewers something to watch for when they finally see "Plan 9". If one watches "Plan 9" first, it's just another bad sci-fi flick. Not that "Nosferatu" is bad, but I remember my roommate being a little incredulous that I was watching this slow-paced silent film when he could be watching "Two and a Half Men".
