I have to agree with Ben. Rick Schroder in The Champ (1979) was pretty great. Too bad he went on to do Silver Spoons.

Home Alone (1990). Also Unbreakable (2000) might be Shyamalan's best movie, and it had a very good role for the child. "they called me mr. Glass"

Chloe Moretz in (500) Days of Summer (2009) is a personal fave, she pulls off the wise beyond here years act so well. I do have a feeling that this performance will soon be replaced by her performance in Kick Ass though.

Alex Etel in Millions (2004). Also, not film but the kids who played Sweet Dee, Charlie, Dennis and Mac in the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Xmas special were pretty rad too.

If anyone says, Anakin kid in Phantom Menace... I'll ... be very grrrr :) Seriously, I'd say Isabelle Fuhrman from The Orphan (2009). Though a real creepy movie, I thought she did a great job.
