88 - We Predict That You'll Like "A Prophet"

Oh 2011.

We couldn't stay light and fluffy for long.

Time to get down to some CRIME!

This movie totally blindsided us, and impressed us enough to break our 6 month moratorium on French cinema.

Incredible cinematography, fantastic ensemble cast, and a rags to riches story line will keep you enthralled.

Let's take a look!

Hey Citizen!
So glad you enjoyed the review.
You might consider watching some of our other reviews as well.
While celebrating a film, we also consider ourselves an entertainment show where we try to satirize the current podcast format.

Thanks so much for the supportive and encouraging comment, and have fun watching some movies!

Nice comeback. I wouldn't read too much in to the handle either, you have idiots in the US too, right? :)

A quick hello from France,

I just wanted to thank you for your shows. Your recommendantion are always very interesting with a lot of humor. I specially liked your presentation of the movie "La Haine". Your comments about the french society were really relevant. I haven't had the time to watch the one on the "Prophête" but will do it soon

Hey Collette!
Thanks so much!
I was really proud of our review on La Haine. It's a movie I really wish more people would watch, especially here in the states. Americans and French aren't as different as they'd like to think they are. Maybe it's why we don't get along...

I must say, one of the things I enjoy about MYMHM is that I'm as likely to discover a film from crazy-foreign-land as I am from .. Well, the US is foreign to me as well, but my poorly made point stands.

Your show is excellent, your mix of thoughtful insight and pure irreverence is excellent, and your film choices are excellent. You two could lose the shirts more often, though.

Much appreciated "Another", but NO ONE needs to see me with my shirt off! This chest hasn't seen the sun in YEARS. You'd have to have a pretty wicked goth/vampire fetish to get off on that...

Maybe I can convince Lee to do some tasteful nudes for the show...

Thank you for your review of this movie! I've read some other reviews that said that all the mystical, artsy montages (the does etc) dragged the movie down. Luckily I watched it nonetheless and I am really glad you appreciated this aspect of the movie - because I certainly did.

What I was stunned by was how irresistibly logical and clear the course of the plot, causes and consequences were laid out so that the improbable story of this rise from zero to boss actually is so convincing. You don't mention it but it was almost the main feature of this film for me. The mystical aspect isn't remotely necessary for this effect, this is what surprised me - those scenes are more like a rudimentary side story that never got told, it was buried by the necessities of a brutally "consequential" reality, which is a neat meta-statement for a movie like this, I think.

I really enjoy your show, as always (except for your recommendation of "Sunshine" - have you noticed the unsettling take on suicide within the not-so-subtle-subtext of that movie?), so thanks and keep up the good work!

P.S.: I would love to see an episode where you leave the plain review mode for once and dig deep into the interpretation and commentary on a movie (even with spoilers - a bit like what they do at metaphilm.com) - you guys are actually pretty smart.

Hey "Yet Another",
I love the interps on the "artistic" elements of the film. In my own head, while watching, I had a variety of experiences, on the nature of religion in media. The spirituality of crime if you will. Embracing a community, defining a community, the parallels between a criminal brotherhood and religious one (without the film making any "grand" statement that the two are synonymous).
The movie's story is a perfectly capable rags to riches story, but the extra elements were what kept me thinking and re-examining throughout the whole film.

We've dabbled with more intense analysis, and typically that will rely on potential spoilers, however we really work hard to not supplant the films we discuss. It's a really fine line. We love that people find us entertaining, but we really DO want our fans to check out the films we review. That often means not indulging our inner dramaturg, and erring on the side of "entertainment".

the clip that you chose to depict the 'nuiscance of french language'
is unfortunate. derogatory here is 'a pig', and it's not in french but
arabic. it was up to the translator to be more inventive. to deliver
this i'd go with:
"calling me, the arab, a pig?!"
or
"your gentile! your a pig!"
