89 - Make Some Room for "The Brothers Bloom"
Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 6:27PM It's kind of a trip to see we covered "Brick" a year and a half ago.
Every week. Without fail. A new episode drops here at MYMHM, and now it's time to return to Rian Johnson.
He's an exciting director for us to discuss, as he is developing a reputation for putting fresh spins on established genres. He started by putting a hard hitting crime noir in high school, and His time travel film "Looper" (currently in production) has been garnering some buzz lately, so it's time to take a look at Brothers Bloom, a playful and whimsical twist on the caper film.
***UPDATE***
The First person to leave a comment here correctly guessing what film we'll review next week will win an MYMHM keychain!

Oh man, I loved this movie, back when it first came out.
But yeah, it's definitely a split the crowd kinda movie.
Surprised you guys didn't catch the fact that it loses the standard story structure the further it goes. Thus why it starts with a narrator, moves on to a rounded off con with background story, and then each next step strays further and further from your standard conman plot, till the cataclysmic ending.
I really want for people to start guessing. After glancing through the archive, i'll throw out Rabbit Proof Fence, even though my intuition is telling me that the movie will be something more clever and indie. I'm just trying to get this ball rolling.
Hey John!
We had some commentary to that effect that landed on the cutting room floor. We try to keep our episodes SHORTER than the film we're reviewing... ;-)
Hey McShame!
EXCELLENT GUESS, but no. That's not what we're reviewing next week. We might be taking a look at that one in the future though...
The Last Detail. That is my guess, as well as a subliminal plant for more Hal Ashby.
Is it Avatar? I missed that one. OOH! Titanic...2!
Hey Kathleen! Last Detail is a genius flick, but we're saving it. We should just consider doing a quick spin off show focused solely on Hal Ashby...
Master o Disaster You were SO CLOSE!!! I t has a "2" in the title but it rhymes with Schmiron Man...
[Note: we are not, nor ever will be reviewing Iron Man 2 on MYMHM. The above comment to Master O Disaster should be regarded as satire, and irrelevant to the current key chain giveaway.]
Is it CREATOR starring the amazing Peter O'Toole, Mariel Hemingway and Vincent Spano?
John Hillcoat's film The Road?
Hey Becky! Nope, BUT GREAT FLICK! Loves me some Peter O'Toole!
Hey Alice, That WOULD'VE been my first guess from Lee's tease too, but alas it is not correct...
Death Race 2000?
Now now Alice, you've already had a turn. Why not let the other kids play now ;-)
VALHALLA RISING!
I totally missed the instruction to comment HERE.
WE HAVE A MUTHERCUSSIN WINNER!!!
Congrats Alex Lyons! We'll get your info and send out your keychain shortly!
