87 - I Can't Think of a Good Pun for "Punch-Drunk Love"

You can know someone for years.

You can hang out with them a lot.

You can review movies with them every week, for an audience of millions, for a year and a half.

All of this...

And one of the happiest days for our friendship was finding out that we both love the film "Punch-Drunk Love" after thinking the other didn't like it.

Beautiful...

It strikes me as odd that you both love the film and everything you don't love about it is what I love most about it! I had vague memories of it from many years ago, maybe 2003, and I rewatched it recently and was blown away by how brilliant and creative the visual scheme was. The clips you showed highlighed the recurring lens flares, the natural light that gives it a totally alien look (and, in one iconic scene, creates black silhouettes of the pair in Hawaii with the lush green and blue behind), and the use of blues and reds (after the restaurant scene there is a blue semi that stalks them, which is followed by a car ride bathed in blue light and blue flares)... I think it's amazing. The opening shot, a very simple shot of a desk and a warehouse, is framed so that he is off in his corner in a corner of the frame while the wall stretches out toward the camera in the right half of the frame, predictably painted blue on the lower half. Antonioni would have been jealous. There's so much to love! And I love his Kubrickian black comedy more...
