It strikes me as odd that you both love the film and everything you don't love about it is what I love most about it! I had vague memories of it from many years ago, maybe 2003, and I rewatched it recently and was blown away by how brilliant and creative the visual scheme was. The clips you showed highlighed the recurring lens flares, the natural light that gives it a totally alien look (and, in one iconic scene, creates black silhouettes of the pair in Hawaii with the lush green and blue behind), and the use of blues and reds (after the restaurant scene there is a blue semi that stalks them, which is followed by a car ride bathed in blue light and blue flares)...
