93 - Take a Drink from "The Fountain"
Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at 8:40PM What with him being nominated for an Academy Award this year for "Black Swan" we figured it was about time we covered an Aronofsky film.
Of course we couldn't cover "Pi", that would be WAY too obvious, so instead sit back, relax, and let's take a look at a visual FEAST of a film...

Event Horizon ... can't be this obvious.
I don't even remember what Event Horizon was about. New guess. Picnic at Hanging Rock.
stab in the dark here...
Australia + Penal Colony = "Van Diemen's Land"?
O.o Are you gonna review Tomorrow When the War Began?????!!!!!!!
Cold so far, but those are three films I've never even heard of. Worth checking out?
I'm just gonna throw this out here: There is a ring in the conquistador story which appears in the future story. There is also a ring tattoo in the future story which appears in the future story. Given that the story set in the distant past is fictional, and that the story set in the distant future ties into both it and the present story... you tell me what's real and what's part of a book entitled 'The Fountain'. If you need another hint, I will say that the wife asks her science husband to finish her conquistador story, and so a scientist is charged with writing a fictional story... these are the clues which led me to a certain conclusion. I'll spare the details. Oh, and one more thing - you know that scene in the present that ends both times? At least one of those is fictional within the film's universe. Those are my selective hints about the composition of the story within the film. I do apologize if my hints are worse than the already hilariously ridiculous DVD description.
Van Diemen's Land was kind of like Valhalla Rising. I can't accuse it of being a “bad” or poorly made movie, but after two viewings I’m still not sure how I feel about it. If you watch it, I would avoid checking out any trailers before hand. They definitely set a different kind of expectation from what the movie is actually like.
Also my final guess is “Lucky Miles” since the characters spend a lot of time looking towards the horizon.
It's gotta be The Dish, or at least I am hoping it is. That's a great movie.
great episode!! <3
Yay! This is a wonderful movie. The fact that you're left free to build up the connections between the three storylines is probably what we all like. I don't see how people don't like it, it's interesting, it's thought provoking, visually stunning (with barely any CGI), the performances take a hold of you... The driving force here is the interplay between love, obsession and death, whatever you make of the 3 periods is secondary to that.
My only complain here is that you didn't even mention the awesome soundtrack? C'mon guys!
Hmm, maybe it's just that a Clint Mansell soundtrack being awesome goes without saying.
Cheers!
I know this review is kinda old, but I just discovered you guys a month or two ago and am still catching up, but I really gotta say that I LOVED this movie. I actually saw it in theaters and it blew my mind. Really glad you guys covered it and hopefully helped the movie gain more of a following!
