102 - Hero Head to Head: "Defendor" and "Special"
Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at 11:05PM Our watch list is WAY too long.
To get through some of your awesome recommendations we're going to start a semi-regular movie show down, and to kick it off were taking a look at two indie vigilante flicks.
Witty superhero deconstruction satires are a dime a dozen, but these two are well worth the price of admission.
I wonder who would win in a fight... Special or Defendor...

I'm actually interested in seeing Defendor. Have seen it on the shelves at work awhile back. Pretty much a Kat fan, but that's not the main reason why.... Okay, that maybe the main reason why.
This episode seems to end rather suddenly, I'm used to more of an outro. Are you sure the upload was completely right?
i know you had trouble uploading this, but fyi, seems to be missing the tail end of the episode.... right as juan is talking about michael kelly being a phenomenal actor. :/
Thanks for the heads up guys! We're working on replacing it now, but having some issues with the Blip uploader. If it's not corrected by tomorrow we'll use another service...
hi there buddies........great review but i think it had some problems technically....stopped abruptly!!
hey.....how about a horror movie genre going head to head guys.....could not wait for this to happen!!
i think u'll consider my recommendation!!
can u review any of our indian classics ??
bcoz i seriously think it might add a masala to MYMHM...
Late to the comment party, as usual.
Neither of these movies were what I expected, but for some reason it worked to the advatange of "Special," and just the opposite for "Defendor." I think I blame the marketing. When in doubt, blame the marketing.
Especially for these mid-tier movies, I don't think PR people completely understand how much a deceitful, or mis-understood campaign can actually harm the film. If you haven't created the right expectation for the audience, it wont matter if the film is incredible, the audience will still be unsatisfied...
I HATED the matte for Special...as in your clips and a dimly possible promo campaign (did that include change on the $1M?)...and I really don't know what you mean saying the film was cut from the cloth. You may as well say it's patterned after Woody Allen's Alter NYC, and that's why we don't see the engineering dynamic that we'd hoped to get into once we'd sorted all our Super Nepotism Genesis Issues instead of weird vestment-related worklife perversion and some chucky dialogue, but Lee, it's like getting served diluted rosewater in your Misty May.
Nice mohawk. Look, whatever these ad campaigns promised, they did not cover what sort of suggestibility I'd want in the theatre; 3 to 10 grams of vitamin B complex, rounds of espresso, sugar, maybe just some Sugar Sugar Rune on my PDA or a lot of distracting work memos...are these date movies if they're downers like this? If they'd said sugar they could have grossed 3 million (As opposed to RED's sweet sweet candy with firearms at 27M or whatever) and competed handily with RoboCop BD re-releases. At $7K, Special had to reeeeally fail to book armed forces showings, much less classes hoping to farm controposto to The Producers....
My vote officially goes to Special.
EST, it certainly is the sweeter of the two films...
